Collaboration & Turkish Delights at 2015 Radius Travel Global Summit

March 13, 2015 |

More than 150 senior travel management executives descended upon the Raffles Istanbul recently for the 2015 Radius Travel Global Summit, representing Radius Travel member agencies from across the globe, including nine experts from the Travel and Transport and Ultramar Travel global team. This annual event served as a tremendously fruitful opportunity to talk with our global partners in person, collaborate on how to serve our clients better, and brainstorm new ways to “make global work.”

Our company had excellent representation at the event, with four executives from Ultramar Travel, including Michel Botbol (President), Evan Friedman (Executive Vice President) Carolann Martini (Senior Vice President, Client Consulting) and Barbara Yarar (Senior Vice President, Operations), as well as five from Travel and Transport, including Tim Fleming (Chief Operating Officer) April Wheeler (Vice President, Account Management), Phil Crofton (Managing Director of Global Sales), as well as Hollie Whaley and Rebecca Cardenas (Global Account Managers).

2015 Radius Global SummitOne of the key advantages of the Radius model is the local expertise our member agencies provide. During the early hours of the summit, our team met with Radius Travel member agencies from across the world, discussing local best practices for ticketing, visa requirements, best-in-market tools, online adoption, and more for specific agencies, countries and regions. This fruitful time touched everything from staffing shortages in the travel industry in Singapore to food preferences in India. We bring this local expertise to our clients everyday.

2015 Radius Global SummitThe next day, keynote speaker Liselotte Lyngso gave a stirring challenge to be game changers, actively shifting the travel landscape to best serve our clients. Lyngso began her address via Skype but then suddenly appeared in person to continue the delivery, challenging listeners to meditate on the importance of face-to-face interaction. While video conferencing and working remotely have their place, Lyngso demonstrated the role that travel will always play in business.

Continuing on the game changer discussion, workshops focused on the relationship between traveler security and individual privacy concerns, as well as how privacy regulations vary globally including Safe Harbor laws and PCI compliance. Lyngso was joined by experts from Etihad Airways, IATA and Travelport to discuss game changers in the aviation industry, from the new data opportunities afforded by the New Distribution Capability (NDC) to the ever-growing role of in-flight Wi-Fi to purchase things movies, books and food.

The next day Peter Molin Rhode, Lead Negotiator & Category Manager of Novo Nordisk, provided the customer perspective on the evolution of the TMC-Travel Manager Relationship. He also shared challenges his company faced with their previous TMC in terms of data quality, which was a differentiator for Radius due to our local anchoring and best-in-market tools. At the event, awards for modernizing data in order to accommodate ARC were distributed and Travel and Transport was one of nine Radius member agencies to receive this award.

2015 Radius Global SummitEvent organizers prioritized team building and networking opportunities throughout the summit, from an opening team building art project to a “Grand Bazaar” complete with Turkish dancing lessons, Turkish coffee, traditional Turkish dress and Turkish delight. Attendees also had the opportunity to tour the old city of Istanbul at the conclusion of the conference.

The biggest value Travel and Transport global attendees always find with these global meetings is the ability to network with our member agencies and suppliers, especially those we work with on a daily basis on behalf of our current global customers. We always find they have such similar values and goals with regards to servicing customers and they are incredibly invested in doing what is best for our mutual customers. These lessons will endure, along with the plethora of “summit selfies” taken with our global partners!
