A huge thank you to Delta Airlines for sponsoring the 2013 Travel and Transport Delta Days again this year! This year’s eight lucky Travel and Transport winners got to experience a wonderful two-day stay in Seattle and some unforgettable adventures.
One of the highlights of their trip included a private, behind-the-scenes tour of the Boeing facility in Renton, WA. Boeing representative, Doug Fischer, conducted this tour of the assembly line. Eric Nielsen, Senior Manager, Partner Solutions Group, who traveled with the Delta Days winners as a Travel and Transport sponsor, found one particular fact about the facility especially interesting while on the tour. “The tail and rudder of the plane are painted with the color and logo of the airline that will receive the plane first prior to being placed on the aircraft. This is done due to the fact that precise balance of the rudder is critical, and the addition of paint affects this delicate balance.”
Karen Skinner, General Manager – Operations, who joined the Delta Day winners as a Travel and Transport sponsor, was amazed with the organization and cleanliness of the plant. She also learned the average aircraft takes 11 days to complete on the moving assembly line at the Renton plant once the fuselage arrives via train from Wichita, KS. No cameras are allowed in the plant, however, thanks to special permission given to Travel and Transport by Delta, a Boeing representative was kind enough to take this photo with a Boeing camera so the awesome experience could be shared.
Other Seattle activities included a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous Pike’s Place Market, visiting the iconic Space Needle and the breathtaking Chihuly Garden of Glass Museum. The winners also got a chance to ride on the “Great Wheel” Ferris wheel. The group later visited the Travel and Transport reservation center located in Seattle, giving the winners a chance to meet fellow employees to connect and network with various departments face to face.
Special thanks to Melissa McLaughlin and Michael Bauerle from Delta who were kind enough to be gracious hosts. Also, thanks to Ryan Sieroty, Director Global Accounts with Fairmont Hotels for his hospitality, and Visit Seattle for rolling out the red carpet for the Travel and Transport winners.
Delta Days V will take place in June 2014, so be ready to learn more about Delta Air Lines and a chance to win the 2014 trip with fellow Travel and Transport employees!
